The short version
Rarefied has no accounts, and we don't collect your name, email or anything else that identifies you. We count plays and answers anonymously, so we know how many people play and how rare each answer really is.
What stays on your device
Your browser saves a few things so the game works the way you expect:
- Your progress on today's climb, so you can leave and come back.
- Your stats: climbs, streaks, altitudes and past results, and your Free Climb best.
- Your light or dark setting.
- A random ID made up by your browser (for example
3f2c…). It isn't tied to you, your device or any other site.
Clearing this site's data in your browser deletes all of it, including your stats.
What we record on our server
When you play the daily climb, our server records, under that random ID: that you opened the climb, each answer you gave and its tier, when you finished, your altitude and how long it took, whether you tapped Share, roughly where the visit came from (for example a search engine or a link we posted) and whether you're on a phone, tablet or computer. When you play a past climb or Free Climb, we record that you started and finished it and how high you got.
Answers we don't recognize are saved without your ID, so we can add the ones that should count. If you send a report, we save what you wrote, which prompt it was about, and the random ID. Please don't put personal information in a report.
We use this to count players, show how common an answer is, and sort answers into tiers. We don't sell or share this information.
Our host
The site runs on Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare handles your IP address to deliver the page and protect the site from attacks. We don't store IP addresses in our play counts. See Cloudflare's privacy policy for how they handle data. The game's fonts are served from our own site.
Ads and cookies
Rarefied is free, and we may pay for it with ads from Google AdSense. When ads are on:
- Google and its partners use cookies and similar technology to show ads, and may use your visits to this and other websites to choose ads that may interest you.
- You can turn off personalized ads in Google's Ads Settings, or opt out of some other ad companies at aboutads.info.
- Google explains how it uses information from sites like ours at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
- Visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland will be asked for consent before personalized ads are shown.
The game itself doesn't use cookies. It saves your progress and settings in your browser's local storage, as described above.
Kids
Rarefied is a general-audience game. We don't knowingly collect information from children, and we don't collect personal information from anyone.
